LIVALO has been studied in adults with certain other medical conditions and characteristics

Just like people, not all statins are the same. Your personal medical conditions or characteristics may be important for you and your doctor to consider when choosing the most appropriate statin for you.

LIVALO may provide certain benefits for adults who have some of the conditions and characteristics below.

Type 2 diabetes

Type 2 diabetes

LIVALO is a statin that effectively lowered LDL (bad) cholesterol in several populations in clinical trials, including patients with type 2 diabetes (T2D).

In a 12-week trial in patients with T2D, LIVALO 4 mg lowered LDL (bad) cholesterol by 41% versus 43% with the commonly prescribed statin Lipitor® (atorvastatin) 20 mg; however, these reductions were found not to be similar.

In the same trial, LIVALO 4 mg did not cause significant changes to fasting blood sugar levels compared with a significant increase observed for Lipitor 20 mg.

Lipitor is a registered trademark of Pfizer, Inc.

Age 65 or older

Age 65 or older

If you’re like many people who are 65 or older and have high cholesterol, you may be taking your statin along with medications for other conditions. It's important to know that LIVALO is less likely to interact with certain other medications due to the way it's processed in the body compared to most other statins.

LIVALO has also been extensively studied in this age group. In fact, 43% of people who participated in very important clinical trials of LIVALO were 65 to 89 years old.

Taking calcium channel blockers (CCBs)

Taking calcium channel blockers (CCBs)

LIVALO is a statin that effectively lowers LDL (bad) cholesterol. However, unlike Zocor® (simvastatin), LIVALO requires no dose adjustments when taken with CCBs like amlodipine and diltiazem.

When the CCBs amlodipine or diltiazem are taken with the commonly prescribed statin Zocor® (simvastatin), they can raise the levels of Zocor® (simvastatin) in the body.

Zocor is a registered trademark of Merck & Co., Inc.

Coronary heart disease (CHD)

Coronary heart disease (CHD)

The American College of Cardiology/American Heart Association 2018 Guideline on the Management of Blood Cholesterol outlines major risk factors for CHD that include:

  • Hypertension
  • Family history of premature CHD
  • Age-related risk by gender
  • Low HDL-C
  • Cigarette smoking

Other factors that can increase your risk and are important to talk with your doctor about include:

  • Family history of premature ASCVD
  • Persistent elevation in LDL-C 160-189 mg/dL (4.1-4.8 mmol/L) and non-HDL-C 190-219 mg/dL (4.9-5.6 mmol/L)
  • Chronic kidney disease
  • Metabolic syndrome
  • Conditions specific to women
  • Inflammatory diseases (especially rheumatoid arthritis, psoriasis, HIV)
  • Ethnicity (eg, South Asian ancestry)

LIVALO was studied in people with high cholesterol and 2 or more risk factors for CHD and was shown to effectively lower LDL (bad) cholesterol as well as Zocor® (simvastatin). Some statins may have interactions with medications commonly used to treat other CHD risk factors, including calcium channel blockers (CCBs) used to treat high blood pressure.

However, unlike Zocor® (simvastatin), LIVALO requires no dose adjustments when taken with CCBs like amlodipine and diltiazem.

Zocor is a registered trademark of Merck & Co., Inc.

Taking warfarin

Taking warfarin

LIVALO is a statin that effectively lowers LDL (bad) cholesterol. However, unlike Crestor® (rosuvastatin), in a clinical trial of healthy volunteers, LIVALO had no significant effect on levels of warfarin (as measured by AUC and Cmax).

Also, LIVALO does not affect PT and INR. These are important measurements in people taking warfarin.

Crestor is a registered trademark of the AstraZeneca group of companies. AUC=area under the curve. Cmax=maximum concentration observed. PT=prothrombin time. INR=international normalized ratio.

Asian descent

Asian descent

LIVALO is a statin that effectively lowers LDL (bad) cholesterol and has been extensively studied in people of East Asian descent. In fact, LIVALO has been studied in nearly 20,000 people of East Asian descent in a large, 2-year study in Japan.

As noted in current guidelines published by the American College of Cardiology and the American Heart Association, people of East Asian descent may have an increased sensitivity to certain statins which can impact the level of statin in the bloodstream.

If you are of East Asian descent, there is no need to reduce the recommended starting dose of LIVALO, and you can receive the full dosing range (1 mg, 2 mg, or 4 mg).
